Like any big city Madrid has the usual range of big department stores, international chains and fashion outlets, but what makes the Spanish capital far more interesting are the eccentric, independent family-run shops and old-fashioned stores that are tucked away in the side streets.

Another draw are the colourful, bustling indoor markets, many of which have been given a facelift and now cater for the tourist sector with bars, restaurants and as well as for locals wanting to buy some fruit and veg. The Mercado de San Miguel, Mercado de San Antón, Mercado de San Ildefonso and Mercado Barceló are among the most centrally located.
