Housed in a former almshouse with a wonderfully over-the-top Baroque doorway by Pedro de Robera, the Museo de Historia de Madrid charts the history of the city from when it became the imperial capital in 1561 to the outbreak of the First World War. Inside are paintings, cartoons, sculptures and a collection of porcelain made in the royal factory in the Parque de Retiro.

Highlights

Look out for León Gil de Palacio's scale model of Madrid in 1830 and Goya's painting the Alegoría de la Villa de Madrid.
