The lower house of the Spanish parliament is located a short stroll from Puerta del Sol. The Neoclassical building is flanked by two bronze lions made from a melted-down cannon captured during the First Moroccan War of 1859-60.

The Congreso was the scene of the attempted coup by Civil Guard Colonel Tejero in 1981 and the bullet holes from his pistol pepper the ceiling of the main chamber.
